Band Histories
ABSENCE OF THE SACRED (2005 - Present)
Absence Of The Sacred was founded in 2005 in Singapore by Mia following the end of her previous band, DISDAIN. She partnered with Hans Yamin (Draconis Infernum, Hellucinate) to record their first demo, Deadening the Dispirited, and soon added Justin Tan on bass. The band released their debut album Atrocities That Birthed Abominations in 2006, gaining international attention and a growing following. With Darren Chua joining on lead guitar and Mike Kalember (Ravenbitch) replacing Justin, they released their second album Era of the Apostate in 2008 and performed live at regional festivals.
In 2009, Hans left the band, and Mia brought in Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus) to record drums for their third album Come Hither O Herald of Death. The album’s release was delayed for three years due to mixing issues and was eventually released in 2012 under Sonic Blast Media. Despite the setback, the band continued performing locally and co-headlined Colombo Open Air in Sri Lanka. Drummers Ziyang Chua (Poison Void) and later Vijesh Ghariwala (Wormrot) supported live shows during this period.
Work began on a fourth album in 2013 but was abandoned due to financial constraints and Mia’s relocation to Cambodia, leading to a long hiatus. In 2023, Mia and Darren revived the band after recovering the unfinished recordings. They reworked the material and recruited Emanuel Salgado (Nightevil) on bass and Kevin Paradis (Benighted, Ne Obliviscaris) on drums. Their fourth album, IV: The Hand That Wounds, was released in the summer of 2024 and features intro and outro tracks by Singaporean Gore Maestro Microchip Terror.
ABYSSAL VORTEX (2013 - Present)
ABYSSAL VORTEX was formed in 2013 when Devan Andoor (Rudra, Truth Be Known) posted his solo material online and Mia came across it. Having co-headlined many shows in the past with their respective bands, the two began discussing a collaborative project. Devan took on the role of composer, while Mia developed the lyrical themes and vocal arrangements. The lineup expanded to include Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth, Soilwork) on drums and Kathir Aryaputra (Rudra, The Wandering Ascetic) on bass.
The band recorded four tracks between Singapore and Sweden, with mixing handled by Necromorbus Studios, known for their work with acts like Funeral Mist and Watain. In 2014, Abyssla Vortex released their debut EP Derelicts of Perdition exclusively online, accompanied by a music video for the track “Ravenous Sepulchres.” The release showcased a blend of atmospheric intensity and technical precision.
Although the band has not performed live, they remain active behind the scenes. Plans are currently underway for a full-length release, expected within the next year or two, continuing their collaborative approach and expanding on the foundation laid by their debut EP.
BLOOD DIVISION (2011 - Present)
Blood Division is a black metal/crust punk band from Singapore, formed in 2009. Known for their raw, aggressive sound and politically charged themes, the band quickly carved out a niche in Southeast Asia’s underground metal scene. Their lineup aside from Mia Priest has included members such as Cider (Helvette, Feral Age) and Hans Yamin (Draconis Infernum, Hellucinate), each contributing to the band’s distinct blend of blackened intensity and punk ethos.
The band’s discography includes the EPs Grip of Power (2011) and Necrordnance (2012), Cursed in Rotting Blood split with Rotting Bull under Ferrous Void Productions, followed by their full-length album Traitors to the Gallows under Cyclopean Eye Productions in 2016. These releases showcase a fusion of relentless riffing, crust-laced rhythms, and bleak atmospheres, earning Blood Division recognition among fans of anarchic and uncompromising metal. Their sound draws influence from both Scandinavian black metal and the raw energy of crust punk, resulting in a confrontational and visceral musical identity. They have performed local and overseas shows, sharing the stage with bands such as Dying Embrace, Kvelertak and Nuclear Death Terror.
Despite operating independently, Blood Division has maintained a consistent presence through studio releases and underground support. Their recorded output reflects a commitment to DIY ethics and sonic extremity while their live shows rip up the pit. As one of Singapore’s more abrasive and politically defiant metal acts, Blood Division continues to represent the darker edge of the region’s heavy music landscape.
